Synopsis: A visually poetic and technologically sophisticated paper animation that follows the experiences and perspective of a young Lithuanian boy, Algis, as he and his family are exiled to Siberia. The play is based on the award-winning Lithuanian graphic novel of the same title by writer Jurga Vile and artist Lina Itagaki. 

Director Valters Sīlis and his creative team have created this work as a technically nuanced and emotionally charged message for children from the age of 10 about the deportation experience of people from the Baltic States, revealing these history pages from a child's perspective. In 1941, on the night of June 14, 15 425 civilians in the USSR occupied Latvia were detained and deported to NKVD concentration camps or life imprisonment in remote areas of the USSR. Among the deportees were 3751 children under the age of 16. On the same night, detentions and deportations were carried out in Lithuania and Estonia. 

The same had happened in Ukraine and Poland on May 22, in Moldova on June 12 and 13, and in Belarus on June 19 and 20. This was done in order to exterminate people who might organise resistance to the occupying regime, as well as to obtain cheap slave labour in the gulags and camps in Siberia.

Synopsis: Every evening, veteran anchorman Howard Beale informs the world about what is new and important through his news broadcast on the National Network. Howard’s ratings are declining, and the executives want to replace him with a new face. Unwilling to leave, Howard announces that he will commit suicide live on air during his final broadcast. Suddenly, he becomes a sensation, and his following rapidly grows – he turns into a rambling old man denouncing the hypocrisies of the times. The National Network soon realises that having a so-called “mad prophet” on air is far more captivating than traditional news. And it is going to send the ratings through the roof.

Synopsis: 128 beats per minute. 4/4 time signature. that's all we can do is a spacetime in which the participants re-create the boundaries between themselves and the collective through a repetitive ritual. the dancers move through the space, merging into and out of coherent movement, while the linear time of the performance becomes an infinite tide, in the variations of whose rhythms the dancers lose and regain their individuality.

drawing on the traditions of techno and electronic club culture, "that's all we can do" calls attention to solidarity and inclusive humanity – something we miss so much in our everyday relationships with each other. when the ties that bind the world together are broken, the best I can do is dance and dance with others.

techno emerged in the late 1980s as a response to the difficult social, political and economic conditions that followed the decline of the neoliberal economy. it was uncompromising music, danced to in abandoned warehouses or in clubs with the lights turned off. it was an environment for a political protest movement that fostered a sense of solidarity, belonging and common identity among the participants.

the first decades of the 21st century have begun with a crisis of democracy, irreversible climate change and the largest mass protests in human history. however, mass mobilisation is no longer able to influence the political agenda and bring about the desired change. the last platform through which we can still make our voices heard is the body. because it is the only thing that belongs to us.

Synopsis: Following the phenomenal success of ROTKHO at the largest and most prestigious theatres and festivals across Europe Polish director Łukasz Twarkowski and his team return to Dailes Theatre. Partnering up with other European theatres, the director will stage ORACLE, the second part of his science trilogy. Continuing to explore a complete fusion of theatrical and cinematic expression, this will be the most ambitious production at Dailes Theatre to date, delving into uncannily accurate prophecies of the future that are already shaping our lives today.

The production will shine a light on the discoveries in natural and artificial intelligence by British mathematician and logician Alan Turing – the creator of the Turing Test – during World War II, when he decrypted messages sent by Nazi forces. The reclusive Turing kept his identity hidden, but due to his sexuality, was subjected to chemical castration by the ruling system. He was a man capable of solving the greatest mysteries of the world, while living a life shrouded in impenetrable secrecy. His legacy includes the Turing, or Oracle, machine – a concept whose physical realisation remains impossible…

The ORACLE is included in the programme of the prestigious Ruhrtriennale festival. Slated for its world premiere on 28 August in Duisburg, Germany, it will celebrate its Latvian premiere with audiences in Riga a few weeks later – on 19 September. The production is being developed in collaboration with a number of international partners, including the Ruhrtriennale team, affirming the reputation of Dailes Theatre in Europe and the purposeful nature of its international collaborations, as it continues showcasing Latvia on the world stage.

The production is created in collaboration with several cross-border partners – the Ruhrtriennale Festival of Arts NewError, Comédie de Genève, Piccolo Teatro di Milano, De Singel Antwerp – and with the support of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. The initial framework for the text was developed during the Complicité Mudlarks International Residency, supported by Complicité Theatre and the Polish Institute in London.

Synopsis: “In Latvian drama, The Prodigal Son is one of the most powerful works about the meeting point of youth and maturity. Personally, I think the relationship between parents and children is one of the most important issues in this play. As a father of two children, I also think about what it will be like when I let them into adult life – what emotions, mistakes and also moments of guilt will be at that moment… In my opinion, shared moments of happiness cannot be replaced by anything else,” Reinis Suhanovs is convinced. The director believes that at the moment when new actors enter the theater, the choice of this play is natural. Suhanovs calls Blaumanis’ masterpiece of dramaturgy programmatic and is staging it for the second time at the Valmiera Theatre.

A play about how important it is to talk, to talk in general. Then you can also put aside that Christmas tree, not to stretch the “threads” of silence and defiance to the point of tragedy. About repaying debts in all senses – to the innkeeper, to the father, to life, to yourself. This emphasis in the new interpretation is especially important for the director.

Synopsis: High in the mountains of Georgia, in a town by the Black Sea, Rasma has been living with her seriously ill son for two months. Juris has been in a car accident that has killed half of his family – his father and grandmother. Juris is haunted by the intense gaze of a blue cow that he noticed on the side of the highway moments before the accident. This awakens something in the young man who has lived an easy life until now. He asks his mother to get him the volumes of folk songs that everyone knows about but few have read. In existential isolation, the family deals with difficult questions about guilt, what is hidden, and how to live on.

“A play about how life forces you to turn the mirror on yourself and see something unexpected. Through passing away, Juris connects with his essence and, ultimately, with his people, with everything that cannot be touched with your hands alone. We also have a spiritual heritage. I want to make this play about the fact that passing away is not the end, but the highest point. Juris goes into the light, he is enlightened and goes away,” says director Māra Ķimele.

Gunārs Priede wrote this play in 1972 in a few days. It immediately ended up on the list of ‘unwanted plays’ due to the regime and premiered in Estonia in 1973.

Synopsis: A while ago, an anarchist jumped out of the window of the central police station during an interrogation – and died. The circumstances of this event remain unknown to this day. Now, in that very same station, in that very same interrogation room, sits the local Maniac. A trickster, capable of impersonating different characters within seconds, throwing even the most experienced police officers into confusion.

What started out as yet another arrest turns into a gripping investigation, in which the main character throws the entire station into disarray and reenacts scenarios of the anarchist’s mysterious demise. As they're dealing with the strange incident of the anarchist’s death, the officers at the station are forced to reconsider their own involvement in it. Under the influence of the Maniac’s scene-stealing personality, past situations become very real, even if conjured from thin air.

Written over fifty years ago by Nobel Prize laureate and Italian master of satire Dario Fo, based on a real event in Milan, reads like a powerful allegory for today’s post-truth era, in which it apparently is not so hard to convince someone of something they’ve never believed. Even more – make them believe they’ve done something they’ve never actually done. Why are we still so fascinated by madmen and outsiders with strong personalities? And why are we willing to march to their beat?

Synopsis: Playthings is a motion performance about how different things learn to get into lockstep in one small box. The play takes us into an imaginary world where we meet the playthings, or playmates, who unexpectedly become very real. Through playing together, things are noticed, new places are discovered, and feelings are sparked.

A mobile and resonant play for children from 3 years old where little spectators get on a journey towards the Universe through playing with imagination and experiencing feelings.

Synopsis: The musical theatre play Alfas is inspired by the events in Jēkabpils in January 2011, when four police officers and one civilian committed an armed robbery at a gambling hall, followed by a runaway and shooting at the moment of arrest on Daugavmala. The consequences were tragic – a police officer died while performing his duties and trying to arrest the robbers. This event coincided with the lowest point of the crisis and at the same time was a poignant reminder of the values ​​of the “fat years”, namely bravado and the public celebration of an expensive, presentable and credit-based lifestyle. These events, more than 10 years ago, may seem like a distant past, but it is still possible to ask these questions - how do we as a society understand the words 'decisiveness', 'strength’, 'manliness' and “heroism’?

By re-evaluating and fictionalizing these events in a dramatic musical form, it is possible to create your own version of how human characters, self-confidence, carelessness and the situation in the country met at one point and caused tragedy. This performance is an opportunity to reflect on the role of men in society. How do they see themselves? What is expected of them? How do they think about all this and find themselves in a dead end?

The performance contains loud gunshots and strong language.

Synopsis: The image of Parsifal has occupied the minds of poets, writers and artists from different cultures throughout the ages. The story of Parsifal is the story of man's journey to the Holy Grail, man's journey to himself.

A mother has brought up her son in the forest, alone, separated from people. So that he would not become evil. But when he enters the human world and follows only his instincts, he inevitably becomes evil. Because he has not learned compassion. He has not learnt and opened his humanity. Parsifal will be accompanied on his journey to humanisation and his search for the Holy Grail by the draughtsman Vilis Daudziņš and the actors of the New Riga Theatre.

German director Matthias Hartmann has explored the medieval novels in verse about Parsifal and the Holy Grail, Richard Wagner's testament to humanity – the opera “Parsifal”, the screenplay by the visionary American director Robert Wilson, under the artistic editorship of Tancred Dorst, and, most recently, the magnificent thousand-page novel “The Red Knight. The Story of Parsifal" by the Swiss writer Adolf Muschg. And wrote his own "The Story of Parsifal".

Matthias Hartmann has directed productions at leading theatres in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as well as operas at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Florence, Paris, Zurich and Geneva. He has been artistic director of the Bochum Schauspielhaus, the Zurich Schauspielhaus and the Burgtheater in Vienna. In 2024, Matthias Hartmann published Why the Gun Doesn't Fire on Stage, a book about the crisis in contemporary theatre and its causes.

Synopsis: The enchanting comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream", often referred to as "high comedy”, is William Shakespeare's masterpiece – his triumph in the battle between word and nature.

In a game of distorting mirrors, the great Bard has woven together the historical, the mythical and the archetypal human, for whom the ancient laws of civilization serve as a fatal augury: human nature does not submit to man. It obeys only the forces of fable, magic and dream.

Being chosen and falling madly in love can sometimes turn out to be but a cruel twist of fate. Love not only unites families but can also tear them apart – just as it can unravel workplaces, political parties and even entire nations. Falling in love is known to have even brought down state leaders.

We are all vulnerable to the great sins of love and the small transgressions of passion, although our daily duties and responsibilities should keep us in check. Synopsis: Once upon a time, a crackling noise quietly announced itself, a sound was born, and as it expanded, feelings.

Once upon a time, the ancient times ended, and in order for there to be someone to tell the time, a wise, beautiful, social, political, active, passive, active and mortal mammal announced itself. It created events, events created stories, and stories created images of events, which were created by the feelings that reached them (sometimes also the mind).

Following this same analogy, two angels can announce themselves in the picture of the mammal's story. They will accept the laws of gravity, language, law, mortality, love and other three-dimensional laws. They will look into the black box, in which about 10 sensitive people once met. The wonders of the life of the body and the passions of the soul entertain and excite them: they hold our cold hands and scream in delight.

This one day on earth is a collage of music, poetry, dance and language, created in an intuitive process of conversation, watching each other's confused hesitations, watching where the sideways glances of contemporaries flash. It contains both our own, imagined, and so-called and tired voices that have haunted us since the ancient Greeks. It is a reportage of our common, timeless humanity. This time it has been our shameful guilt.

Synopsis: It is a performance staged using sensory techniques, which uses fragments from Edvarts Virza's Straumēni.

The performance is suitable for people with visual disabilities. No one will see this performance, but they will experience, through sounds, smells, touch and feel, the calm flow of life and nature. The director says: "In a time when the world is moving at a fast pace and it seems that the hours have become shorter, everything is taken over by technology, people are more likely to experience a feeling of anxiety, panic attacks. A feeling creeps in that you want to stop, take only the closest people with you or be alone and return to the beginnings - peace, the passage of time, cyclicality, authentic sounds, nature – the order of things, as our ancestors knew it. But nowadays it is not so easy to do this, because "when you get off a moving train, it is difficult to jump back on it".”

In turn, E. Virza's Straumēni is like a haven of peace, the beginning of everything and the apparent idyll of the world. Time, which runs its course, nature, which allows you to smell and feel every breath of wind to the bone, hear the buzzing of bees, feel the touch of each season."

Synopsis: After their father’s death, siblings are clearing out the family home. In the attic, they stumble upon a dusty painting – a cityscape of early 20th-century Vienna. The artist's signature is barely legible, but the technique makes it clear that the painter was an amateur, and the piece has little to no artistic value. However, upon closer inspection of the signature, a shocking fact emerges: it was painted by a notorious figure in their youth, someone without whom the previous century in world history would have been entirely different.

Suddenly, what was once a worthless streetscape by a brush-wielding nobody becomes a unique art object worth thousands. At least in the eyes of some family members it is an opportunity to land a fortune. Others, on the contrary, believe the immoral painting should be destroyed, thus atoning for the past suffering. Still others want it preserved as a family relic. The previously harmonious family finds itself divided over the fate of the painting, and uncontrollable passions boil over spiralling into a dark comedy.

Following the success of How To Lose a State (2023), Toms Treinis returns to Dailes Theatre with another provocative piece. Together with his creative team, he presents a morally and ethically charged question – should those who suffered under fascist regimes be allowed to profit from the infamous legacy of the ideologues? In one of the most performed plays in Europe in recent years, German author Marius von Mayenburg’s healing satire confronts uncomfortable truths, exploring how any family might be affected when faced with a choice between morality, justice and prosperity.

Synopsis: Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk’s masterpiece has been described as a book that, once read, stays with you forever. The novel has captivated readers with its philosophical detective story and the scope of its timeless themes. At its center is Janina, a tenacious woman whose unique worldview leads us into exploring the most beautiful mysteries of nature and astrology. She is a romantic with the sharp drive of Miss Marple.

In a remote Polish village, where teacher Janina feels like an outsider, hunters suddenly start dying one after another in the strangest ways. All the evidence points to an astonishing conclusion: could the animals in the area have conspired to take revenge for their slain kin? No one listens to Janina, who believes that the deaths are nature's revenge. The intrigue is brewing: what is humanity’s role in the world if nature has intentions of its own?

Writer Tokarczuk is a star of contemporary literature. Poland's right-wing factions have even labeled her a traitor, and her publishers have had to hire bodyguards for the writer. Unafraid to state truths that people often prefer to avoid, she has succeeded in engaging society in discussions on topics that many find radical or unacceptable. Her novel “Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead” has garnered numerous accolades both in Poland and internationally – among other awards, Tokarczuk has also received the prestigious International Booker Prize.

The novel is being adapted and brought to the Dailes Theatre stage by Ola Mafaalani, a Netherlands-based director of Syrian descent.

Mafaalani has created theatrical adaptations of several popular films and series, including the nine-hour stage version of the Danish series “Borgen”, which became a groundbreaking event in European theatre. She is regarded as the queen of fantasy – her productions weave together unpredictable scenes with characters emerging seemingly out of nowhere.

Olga Tokarczuk's novel “Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead” has been translated into Latvian by Ingmāra Balode. The play features a fragment from William Blake’s poem “The Mental Traveller” in Vizma Belševica’s translation.
