"The stories we tell each other are not harmless. It’s time for change. Time for new audiences. Time for a new repertoire."

Join ETC for a public discussion on writing new plays about inclusive topics in different parts of Europe, and how international collaboration can help emerging creatives find their voice on a larger scale.

The event will also introduce Young Europe’s 'Forgotten Plays Committee', which is rediscovering work by writers from historically marginalised backgrounds—artists who were not granted a place in the European theatre canon, but did crucial work to oppose a one-sided history and still have the power to inspire new generations of writers and audiences.

Speakers include:

  • Mohammad Al Attar, Mentor, Syria/Germany
  • Paulien Geerlings, Head Dramaturg at De Toneelmakerij and Artistic lead on Young Europe IV, Netherlands
  • Tomer Pawlicki, Playwright, Poland/Netherlands
  • Teunkie van der Sluijs, Head of Artistic Development at Young Vic, UK
  • Olga Voronkova, Playwright, Belarus/UK

Moderated by Marina Maleni, Theatre Development Officer, Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC).

Young Europe: Non-Dominant Voices in European Youth Theatre will be streamed live on Thursday 6 October, 17:00 - 18:30 CET. It is the public launch for Young Europe IV, the large-scale international artistic collaboration project by European Theatre Convention (ETC), and takes place during the European Year of Youth 2022.

Young Europe IV connects 8 theatres from 7 countries, who each work with an emerging writer on a new text for young audiences—on stories that aren't told or could be told more often. The plays will be performed in classrooms—the most diverse and inclusive audiences for theatre—and also showcased at a European youth theatre festival in 2024.

Young Europe IV is a crucial step in ETC's pledge to diversify the European theatre sector and fulfil aims set out in the 2021 study, Diversity and Gender Equality in European Theatre.
