Between 2008 and 2010, eleven ETC Member Theatres developed the artistic project "Young Europe - Young Creation and Education in the Theatre" with the support of the Culture Programme of the European Union.
The aim of "Young Europe 1" was to improve collaborations between theatre and education and to stimulate encounters between young theatre professionnals and young audiences. The project consists of eight European co-creations, two workshops with theatre students and two international conferences. The participants were confronted with questions regarding identity and belonging, immigration and rejection, violence, family and relationships and explored new theatrical languages. Young theatre professionals have been given the opportunity to create sustainable international relations and to work closely with young audiences.

With the ambition of letting young actors work together and discover the international co-production process, Young Europe 1 incorporated a co-creation project. Young actors from different European countries have participated in four small-scale co-productions. The model of the co-productions was the following: two ETC Member Theatres from different countries worked in close collaboration on the same new written play they have commissioned to a young playwright. The productions were then staged to school audiences and performed in two languages in both countries. Each play was limited to 45 minutes to allow a discussion between the young European artistic team and the school audiences after the performance.
