Event Overview

"The Drama of the Climate Crisis – New Narratives and Tools for the Future” will see sustainability experts from the ETC Green Theatre Committee discuss the creation of a new, comparable assessment tool to reduce the theatre sector's carbon footprint.

They will set out the principles and shared standards across Europe that are driving the guidance for the cultural sector, with a focus on the Theatre Green Book and an update on the development of the ETC Sustainable Action Code for Theatres.

The discussion will then look at practical action already taken across Europe – including the CO2 calculator used by Staatsschauspiel Dresden, and the 'GRÜNE THEATER' concept at Schauspielhaus Graz – before diving into the ETC Green Toolkit, a new resource for all theatres to take baseline steps and 'easy wins' on sustainability.

The event will conclude with the discussion on how best to measure progress on sustainable action and achieve the overall goal of a climate neutral theatre sector. There will be space for audience Q&A.

Speakers include:

  • Paddy Dillon, Co-ordinator of the Theatre Green Book initiative
  • Misa Rýgrová, Environmental Activities Coordinator, National Theatre Prague
  • Frank Holldack, Project Manager DAS GRÜNE THEATER, Schauspielhaus Graz
  • Joachim Klement, General Director & Artistic Director, Staatsschauspiel Dresden
  • Solenn Koç, Environmental Advisor, Théâtre de Liège
  • Heidi Wiley, Executive Director, ETC

When: Thursday 9 June 2022, 15:00 - 16:30 CET.

Official NEB Side Event

The webinar is complemented as an official side event of the NEB Festival by a sister event on Friday 10 June 2022 (16:00 - 17:30 CET).

This is an artist-led discussion about the ETC project ‘Pipelines’, a cross-Europe theatre project about oil pipelines, corruption and fossil fuels. The 5 participating authors (see below) will discuss their plays and the challenges of writing on the climate crisis:

The event will take place in-person during the Dramatikerinnen-Festival at Schauspielhaus Graz, but will be recorded and made available to watch back on demand. It will be moderated by Elisabeth Tropper, Dramaturg at Schauspielhaus Graz.

The Drama of the Climate Crisis – New Narratives and Tools for the Future presents a crucial step in ETC's pledge to create a climate neutral network by 2030.
