National Theatre Prague (Czech Republic) during the coronavirus outbreak
Very quickly after the start of the lockdown in Czech Republic, National Theatre Prague started a series of safety warnings, jokes, poetry readings and other online activities dedicated to its audience. But when Marta Ljubková’s niece had to write an essay about “Why is Moliere still being staged today”, the head dramaturg decided to document her tutoring.
Ljubková, presented as “Aunt Marta”, filmed her presentation of Moliere to her kids, nephews and nieces, with whom she is on lockdown. And so started this series of videos dedicated to young audiences, which is now enriched by other playwrights and authors like Shakespeare (and his modern staging), Brecht, Ibsen, Jane Austen, Czech classics… Aunt Marta is joined by her colleague Jan Tošovský,, dramaturg at the National Theatre Drama ensemble.
These “cheat sheets for pupils and students” are all available on the theatre’s YouTube channel, along with other spontaneous videos by the ensemble and team.
