The Angels - Do They Exist?

Göteborgs Stadsteater

16 February - 18 April 2024

A story about the love of a football team
By: Gertrud Larsson. Director: Olle Törnqvist

In May 1982, history in Gothenburg was rewritten twice. IFK Göteborg (the biggest and most beloved football club in Gothenburg) wins the Uefa Cup and 100,000 people march for a world free of nuclear weapons. Both football supporters and peace demonstrators fill the arena to the brim.

More than 40 years later, not much is the same. IFK Göteborg barely remains in the highest league and Sweden is on its way into NATO. The angels (nickname of IFK Göteborg and also the name of the supporter club), do they exist? is a story about a city and a world in change.

All depicted through a football-mad family. After receiving a bottle in the head during crowd riots in 1970, the die-hard supporter Hasse meets love in Eva. While Hasse joins in starting the supporter club The Angels to help the club back to the highest league, Eva gets involved in the fight against nuclear power and nuclear weapons. Their two children are devoted supporters like their father.

The angels, do they exist? takes place in three different timelines: 1970 1970–1976, May 1982 and July 10, 2023. A series of historical events become decisive in the lives of the main characters.

After two previous successful plays, playwright Gertrud Larsson now takes us on a journey through Gothenburg's history, from past to present, about football and the fight for peace.

“For me, this is a story about passion and that together we can change the world. The big as well as the small. In a time when wars and crises hang over us like clouds of worry in our sky, it feels good to be invited to a performance about faith, hope and love” Olle Törnqvist, director

Premiere on 16 February 2024. Plays until 18 April 2024.
