Gender Balance in the Cultural and Creative Sectors

Structured Dialogue Sessions with Voices of Culture

ETC has been selected with 34 other participants to take part in Voices of Culture dialogue on gender balance in the cultural and creative sector. The first topic in the 2019 – 2021 round of ‘Voices of Culture’ will be about improving gender balance in the cultural and creative sectors. “Voices of Culture” will give the people most directly working in the sector, a voice to be heard and the opportunity to give their input on this issue. This important topic will also be discussed in other formats set up by the European Union.

Two meetings are planned for the next season:

  • 4 & 5 September: Brainstorming Session, Prague
  • 5 & 6 November: Dialog Meeting, Brussels

ETC's participation will enable a representation of the performing arts in the structured dialogue of Voices of Culture and will follow on from the adoption of a Diversity Code by the ETC Member Theatres in December 2018.

In 2019, ETC has also commissionned an academic study on diversity and gender equality in the European public theatres, based on quantitative surveys in the ETC member theatres (data overview on the diversity in leadership, teams, programmes and audience) as well as qualitative research based on a questionnaire sent to ETC member theatre representatives (concrete measures already taken or encountered difficulties).

Results of the study will be presented during the ETC International Theatre Conference in Amsterdam and published in a Casebook on Diversity in the Theatres in spring 2020. They will build the basis for concrete actions in the theatres and policy recommendations on the regional, national and European level. The quantitative survey developed by the academic team will then be conducted regularly by ETC.
