Teatro Nacional D. Maria II informs that it is launching an international call in order to choose the Artistic Director for the 2024-2027 period, considering the end of the mandate of the Theatre's current Artistic Director on 31 December 2023.

According to the recent amendments to its Statute brought about by the Portuguese Ministry of Culture, the mandate of the new Artistic Director of Teatro Nacional D. Maria II will have a duration of four years, subject to the possibility of two renewals for equal periods, and its nomination by the Minister for Culture will now be preceded by an international recruitment process.

The selection jury is appointed by the Minister for Culture, and it includes Rui Catarino (President of the Executive Board of Teatro Nacional D. Maria II), the chairmen of the jury; Sofia Campos (a member of the Executive Board of Teatro Nacional D. Maria II); Gisela Casimiro (writer, poet and artist); Fátima Alçada (cultural programmer and manager); and Serge Rangoni (the General and Artistic Director of Théâtre de Liège).

Applications are due by 19 November 2023 and, after that, up to five will be selected to be interviewed at a later date.

In addition to a descriptive and detailed CV, all applications must include three letters of recommendation and a programme and motivational presentation letter reflecting on the relevant values, themes and programme interests given the role played by Teatro Nacional D. Maria II within the performing arts sector in Portugal and Europe, as well as its connection to various communities of interest and geographical territories; guidelines for the development of educational, cultural and audience mediation activities; a prospective analysis of the activity of Teatro Nacional D. Maria II; and a critical appraisal of the activity and the results obtained by this Theatre in recent years.
