→ Deadline to apply: Wednesday 22 June 2025
In the framework of European Theatre Convention’s (ETC) Digital Theatre Programme, Théâtre de Liège, Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg, and the Academy for Theatre and Digitality Dortmund are collaborating to support the Belgian theatre group .jpeg collective in their upcoming production, Toutes les beautés du monde.
Toutes les beautés du monde tells the story of the director of an outdated zoo who turns to modern technology to save her business. By partnering with a young XR company, she hopes to secure the zoo’s future. Together, they plan to create the world’s first virtual zoo.
The show explores the evolution of entertainment and the virtualisation of the body at a time when living beings are disappearing. .jpeg collective explores the impact of digital technologies on our intimacy, social relationships, connection to the world, and imagination. Through tragicomic fictional narratives, the collective aims to explore the influence of these technologies on our daily lives.
For this production, we are looking for a Creative Technologist to collaborate closely with .jpeg collective and set up a specific system tailored to the show.
What We Are Looking For
During a 3-week research residency at the Academy for Theatre and Digitality in Dortmund, the Creative Technologist has the task of developing a system that combines:
- live motion capture of 1 or 2 actors using a Rokoko suite on stage
- rigging human skeleton movements onto non-human skeleton movements (animals)
- using, for example, Blender, Cinema 4D or Maya
- live 3D-animated video with cue-based changes
- using, for example, Unreal Engine, Unity or Godot
- live usage of machine learning-based image effects on the 3D animated video
- using, for example, StreamDiffusion in TouchDesigner
- projection mapping of video material, preferably using QLab
- connecting all elements described above, for example with NDI
The Creative Technologist should be an expert in handling the first 3 requirements of the system and have a basic understanding of the other aspects. Throughout the residency, they will receive support from the Academy for Theatre and Digitality team.
In addition to technical expertise, we are looking for someone who is curious and open-minded, and who enjoys experimenting and closely working with the artistic team of the .jpeg collective.
→ At the end of their residency, the Creative Technologist submits a short description of their findings and a short video/images of their process and results to the partners and ETC, to be used for communication purposes.
Timeline
The 3-week research residency will take place at the Academy for Theatre and Digitality in Dortmund between September 2025 and December 2025.
Please note that there may be a requirement for the selected Creative Technologist to be available for several days in February 2026, to participate in the implementation phase during the final rehearsals of the performance.
Remuneration & Travel Grant
The selected Creative Technologist will receive a remuneration of up to €4,500 (depending on experience) for the three-week research residency. The specific working period and salary will be defined with the Creative Technologist, depending on their schedule and availability.
ETC covers travel, accommodation, and subsistence costs of up to €2,230 for the period of the research residency.
