On September 17–20, 2026, Lviv will host the first-ever Showcase “Dimension of Lesia Ukrainka Theatre".
This event will serve as a platform for presenting performances by the Lesia Ukrainka Theatre in Lviv, created between 2020 and 2025. Theatre professionals, critics and managers from across Ukraine and the European Union will gather here to forge new geography of closeness.
Over the course of four days, eight of the Lesia Ukrainka Theatre’s most acclaimed productions will be presented, along with one production by the ‘Lava’ Independent Theatre, founded by former members of the Lesia Theatre Studio. These include productions of contemporary Ukrainian plays, a Ukrainian interpretation of ancient myths, and an unexpected take on Dante and Aristophanes; as well as reflections on the themes of war and identity through the formats of the post-documentary musical, the ancient rave, the biopic, and the eropolitical drama. About the project:
Lesia Ukrainka Theatre is a municipal theatre in Lviv that is implementing changes to theatrical practice, both systemic and artistic. The theatre has been a member of the ETS since 2022.
The idea for the project ‘Showcase: The Dimension of the Lesia Ukrainka Theatre’ originated during the preparation of the major programme ‘The Responsibility to Be’, with which the city of Lviv applied for the title of ‘European Capital of Culture 2030’. Although Lviv did not win the title, this programme will, to a large extent, still be implemented in collaboration with a range of organisations and with the support of Lviv City Council. The main aim of the project is to create a showcase as a tool for the international representation of contemporary Ukrainian theatre, to strengthen institutional capacity and to integrate the theatre sector into the European context through networking and partnership.
