Hamlet

Teatro Stabile di Torino - National Theatre

6-26 October 2026

From 6 to 26 October 2026, Hamlet, directed by Leonardo Lidi, opens the seventieth anniversary season of the Teatro Stabile di Torino – where Lidi is resident director and head of the School for Actors. With this production, he reaffirms the theatre’s deepest vocation: to serve as a living instrument through which to question the present.

Lidi’s staging does not simply revisit a classic; it transforms it into a revelatory snare, capable of exposing contradictions and illusions, restoring to the art of theatre its critical and indispensable nature.

In his director’s notes, Lidi writes:

“I am not seeking Hamlet as we have grown accustomed to imagining him, nor pain as it is expected to appear. I have built another world—a declared artifice—to enable a shared approach through representation. It is a paradox inherent to theatre itself: the more it admits to being false, the more it can touch upon truth. This performance does not claim to display truth; rather, it seeks to lead the spectator to that moment of awareness when one realises that truth does not reside upon the stage, but within the resonance the stage provokes. Truth does not show itself—yet, as Shakespeare might say, it may be revealed to the eyes of the most perceptive spectators.

Thus, theatre once again becomes a place of communion. When the spectator takes their seat, they have already agreed to mirror themselves in what they will see on stage, unaware of what reflection will be returned. Here lies the meaning of theatre today: an indispensable trap, defying every museal refuge. A space where sincerity—fragile and elusive as it may be—can, for an instant, find the courage to reveal itself. In this, Hamlet remains our contemporary: for he reminds us that theatre does not exist to reassure, but to ensnare. Not to comfort, but to awaken.”
