The premiere of the much-awaited second performance of the renowned theatre director Timofey Kulyabin at Ivan Vazov National Theatre will take place on May 31, and June 1, 3, and 4.
After his production of “Nora”, in which Kulyabin carried the well-known plot to the epicentre of contemporary society, where Ibsen’s characters have become appendages of their smartphones, now he breathes new life into another of Ibsen’s masterpieces - Hedda Gabler.
In Kulyabin’s interpretation of Hedda Gabler, there are many more characters than in Henrik Ibsen's famous play. These are not only the people the main characters meet, nor just their random or not-so-random acquaintances; they are also the ones mentioned in the play but usually not appearing on stage. What is more, in this innovative performance, through live camera feeds from different locations around Sofia, the director shows the urban life along with the characters themselves.
That way the city itself becomes an important character – a modern large city, the capital of the country where the dramatic events unfold.
Another key "character" is contemporary art. It is both a sphere of activity for most of the characters, their business, a subject of their research and fantasies, and even a way of life. And – as in the case of the main character – it is a powerful personal gesture of protest, the price of which is, in fact, life itself.
