"We will continue to tell the stories. Because on stage, nothing is real, everything is fiction. It is the poetic act that reveals the complexity of the world. In these brutal times, when authoritarianism and obscurantism assault us from all sides, when everyone plays on the fear of others, we need theatre, we need creativity, we need artists and we need the great stories that bring people together." Christophe Rauck
The Théâtre Nanterre-Amandiers is a National Drama Centre (CDN) — a creative space open to the world. It offers diverse audiences the stimulating, essential and daring visions of living artists and works from the repertoire.
Opened in 1965, it has been led by a succession of outstanding directors, including Patrice Chéreau, Jean-Pierre Vincent and Philippe Quesne.
In January 2021, Christophe Rauck was appointed director of the Nanterre-Amandiers Theatre. Since then, the theatre has been the focus of a large-scale architectural project led by Norwegian studio Snøhetta. When it reopens at the end of 2025, it will be able to stage three simultaneous productions in three auditoria seating 730, 400 and 200 people. The new building will have five studios for resident artists.
Christophe Rauck’s project explores the shared experience of theatre in the Greater Paris region with artists, authors, partners, residents and audiences of all kinds. It promotes contemporary creation and artistic diversity by staging quality performances for a varied public, helping develop the theatre sector locally, nationally and internationally. Education and works by young artists are critical elements of the project, reflecting its mission to support and help build the theatre of the future.
