World Theatre Day Premiere: ‘Comédia de Enganos’

Teatro do Noroeste – Centro Dramático de Viana

27 March 2026

On March 27, 2026, the Sá de Miranda Municipal Theatre hosts the premiere of the Teatro do Noroeste - Centro Dramático de Viana’s 174th creation, ‘Comédia de Enganos’ (The Comedy of Errors). Directed by Artistic Director Ricardo Simões, this production is a landmark event for the company’s 35th anniversary.

The Concept:
The play offers a meta-theatrical take on Shakespeare’s first comedy, where the narrative of the play mirrors the real-life dynamics of a theatre troupe. In a symbolic bridge between past and present, the current resident ensemble performs alongside founding actors, many of whom are now seniors. The production explores the humorous tensions and ‘errors’ occurring in the backstage area as different generations of actors collide over artistic styles, ultimately celebrating the company's endurance and future.

The Cast:
The large-scale ensemble features Adriel Filipe, Alexandre Calçada, Armanda Santos, Elisabete Pinto, Filomena Mouta, José Escaleira, Nuno J. Loureiro, Rafaela Sá, Ricardo Ribeiro, Tiago Fernandes and Tomás Gonçalves.

Schedule:
Following the World Theatre Day premiere at 9:30pm, the show will run until April 19, 2026, with a total of 11 sessions. To accommodate different audiences, there’ll be a diverse range of showtimes, including morning performances for the general public.

A Global Message for Peace and Theatre

Continuing an established institutional tradition, Teatro do Noroeste - Centro Dramático de Viana is responsible for the official Portuguese translation of the World Theatre Day Message 2026, in cooperation with the International Theatre Institute (ITI-UNESCO).

To ensure the message reaches a wide audience and inspires reflection on the role of theatre in building a more peaceful world, the company has produced a video format read by the entire team. This video can be viewed online.

Commitment to Accessible Culture

In line with the company’s mission to provide social and intellectual accessibility, The Comedy of Errors will feature a comprehensive suite of resources:

  • Portuguese and English Subtitles: Available at every session.
  • Simultaneous Translation into Portuguese Sign Language: Scheduled for April 16.
  • Audiodescription and Tactile Stage Recognition: Provided on April 16 to ensure an inclusive experience for visually impaired spectators.
  • Post-show Talk: A mediation session with the artists will take place on April 10.
