'Look Back in Anger': Exploring the Complexities of Toxic Relationships

Teatrul Național ”Lucian Blaga” din Cluj-Napoca

March 2026

15 March marked the debut of a long-awaited performance on the stage of the Cluj-Napoca National Theatre: John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger, adapted and directed by Tudor Lucanu. Elaborating upon the seminal British play that revolutionised theatre at the time of its publication, this new production aims to raise awareness about the various forms that domestic abuse can take in a society much too often willing to turn a blind eye.

Jimmy (Tudor Jula) and Alison Porter (Ioana-Maria Repciuc) are a young couple whose married life is plagued by the repetion of toxic patterns, partially concealed by the passion they nevertheless share. Jimmy lives in a constant state of discontent, while Alison tries to mitigate his angry outbursts through a submissive attitude—which, however, only serves to provoke him further. Their friend and roommate, Cliff (Ștefan Dogaru), also becomes part of this dysfunctional dynamic, which is ultimately disrupted only by the arrival of Alison’s friend Helena (Cecilia Lucanu-Donat), who, in an unsettling plot twist, ends up taking Alison’s place, thus creating a new problematic ecosystem. In his adaptation, Tudor Lucanu shifts the thematic focus away from the class tensions that fuel Jimmy’s anger, creating a powerful theatrical indictment of abuse in all its shapes and forms.

In this context, the music composed by Radu Dogaru and performed live by the actors becomes a direct—even brutal—call for awareness, intended to lay bare the drama of this relationship, which is based on a power imbalance. Set designer Zsófia Gábor highlights the two performative planes by constructing overlapping spaces that delineate the action from the musical commentary. The Porters’ eclectic living room also offers a visual clue to the characters’ existential confusion, a state partly responsible for Jimmy’s anger—for which the performance, however, allows him no justification whatsoever.
