Orgia

Teatro Arriaga

22 & 24 June 2023

Teatro Arriaga makes 'Orgia' - its world opera premiere of the current season - a sustainable production based on the ETC Green Book standards!

Teatro Arriaga has decided to take a step forward in favour of sustainability in the performing arts and has decided that "Orgia," its upcoming world opera premiere scheduled for June 22nd and 24th, will be the first in-house production to adopt the parameters of the ETC Green Book.

Thus, the set design of this co-production between Teatro Arriaga, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, and the Festival Castell Peralada will be made with 50% recycled or reused materials.

For example, part of the stage used last year in another production at the Teatro Arriaga, such as "Erresuma/Kingdom/Reino," also directed by Calixto Bieito, like "Orgia," will be utilised in this staging. Some elements from "Johannes Passion," another production of the Teatro Arriaga, will also be repurposed. Additionally, some garments and props will be acquired second-hand or from local shops.

As a result of joining this initiative, Teatro Arriaga also commits to reusing at least 65% of the elements used in "Orgia" in upcoming in-house productions.

Sustainable... and worldwide!
The sustainable nature of "Orgia" is yet another appealing aspect of this production, whose world premiere in June (on the 22nd and 24th) is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the season and a must-see event on the opera calendar.

"Orgia" is a new opera composed by Hèctor Parra specifically for this occasion, commissioned by the Arriaga Theater of Bilbao, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and the Peralada Festival. The three entities are co-producers of this show, with a libretto and stage direction by Calixto Bieito.

It is designed for three outstanding singers and a top-notch instrumental group, the Ensemble Intercontemporain from Paris, a globally recognised ensemble created in 1976 by the renowned composer and conductor Pierre Boulez.

"Orgia" is based on the impactful play by Pier Paolo Pasolini. As soloists, the stage will host the magnificent Lithuanian soprano Ausrine Stundyte, alongside English baritone Leigh Melrose, two prominent figures in contemporary opera who have previously collaborated
with Bieito.

They are joined by another soprano, Jone Martínez, whom we have also had the pleasure of enjoying in other productions at the Arriaga Theater, such as "Vivaldi, poema para cuerda y dos voces," directed by Bieito himself, or "Moto-Membra Jesu Nostri" in the current season.
