*ETC MEMBERS: Apply for Translation Grants to translate these texts from English into further European languages*

This year, ETC put out a call for texts by rising / well-established playwrights in our 25 member countries that had never before been translated into english. The idea was to generate more attention for these playwrights and their work on a European level; create a pool of interesting contemporary texts for ETC Members to use; and support the international trajectory of text-based theatre plays through translation.

The programme was called ENGAGE Readings - New Drama. Texts were submitted by ETC member theatres in late 2020, and the newly-formed ETC Drama Committee selected three texts to recieve funding and be translated into English for the first time.

The three selected texts were:

  • SEX PLAY, by Patty Kim Hamilton, which portrays the increasingly complicated topics of human sexuality and gender identities, as well as the stress, frustration and sometimes violence these topics carry.
  • Sweet Sixteen, by Casper Vanderputte. A powerful play on a most relevant and difficult subject, suicide at a young age.
  • Otec hlídá dceru (Father Looks After Daughter), by Ondřej Novotný. A play built around a young father taking his pre-school daughter for a walk in a park and to the playground.

Full descriptions can be read here and clips of a performance of each text can be watched below.
