Premiere at the Cyprus Theatre Organisation’s New Stage

Starting this Friday, 8 April 2022, and every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the New Stage of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation presents Sophie Treadwell's play “Machinal”, directed by Avra Sidiropoulou. The actors and the production's creative team trace the author's mechanized world to gradually breathe life into the various facets of the female experience.

Machinal, one of the most important works of contemporary American drama, written by a particularly sharp voice, Sophie Treadwell, focuses on female identity, the critical moments of her struggle to cope with the weight of her multiple social roles, the oppression she suffers in both her family and work environment, but also her desires, what she longs for and what remains buried in the turmoil of everyday life.

The author uses a real event as her starting point to convey, in highly rhythmic language, a young woman's agonizing struggle to maintain the supposed normality of her existence, documenting the transitional stages in the course of her life: from marriage to honeymoon, from work to home, and from motherhood to an extramarital affair.

The director, Avra Sidiropoulou, and the dynamic team of collaborators who accompany her confront the expressionistic style of the play to create on stage with words, sound and images the journey of this woman towards the assertion of her personal freedom.
