Radar East (Radar Ost) Explores Art and Conflict for 2021

Deutsches Theater Berlin

7 - 10 October 2021

Planning a festival in pandemic times with closed theatres and borders is a special challenge and leads at best to creative solutions. Deutsches Theater (Berlin, Germany) will host the RADAR OST festival in October 2021, where artists from Bosnia, Belarus and Russia will collaborate to create productions in Berlin that deal with the tension between "art and conflict" in theatrical terms. Which topics are taboo and whose stories are to be forgotten? What risks are we ourselves prepared to take? By what means are artists silenced? How can we talk about war with humour and experience a state of emergency? And what does it cost artists to successfully market themselves successfully in the West?

A special country focus in 2021 is Belarus. With the help of the Goethe Institute Minsk, the theatre group KUPALAUCY - founded by artists who left the renowned Janka Kupala Theatre in protest – will come to Berlin. They will present a highly musical Woyzeck adaptation. In addition, two artists from the group will be guests of the DT for two months. This encounter will provide insights into the current situation, with first-hand information and a direct exchange with the interested audience.

We look forward to the return of “Decamerone” directed by Kirill Serebrennikov, a co-production with the Gogol Centre Moscow, and to “In A Real Tragedy Not Only A Heroine Dies, But A Choir” by the young Russian director Ksenia Ravvina, which is dedicated to all artists who are discriminated and silenced.  Let us invite you to “What Did we Laughed” by Maja Zeco and Ina Arnautalic from Bosnia into a haunted house where everyday life in war can be experienced with its comical sides. Interaction is also the focus of Ada Mukhina from St. Petersburg with her lecture performance “How to Sell Yourself to the West” and “Risklab”, a "telematic performance with guest artists from risky contexts".
