European Sustainable Recognition Shared with Audiences

Teatro do Noroeste – Centro Dramático de Viana November - December 2025

Teatro do Noroeste – Centro Dramático de Viana (TN-CDV) shared with its audiences during the opening of the Festival de Teatro de Viana do Castelo, the achievement of a significant milestone in its sustainability strategy: the formal attribution of the Intermediate Level of the Theatre Green Book (TGB).

This recognition took place during the European Theatre Convention’s (ETC) International Theatre Conference in Riga, Latvia, which the Company attended. The Intermediate Level is the third of the four TGB certification levels and it specifically measures a theatre’s progress toward achieving ‘net-zero’ status, surpassing the Preliminary and Basic levels.

The Theatre Green Book (TGB) is a fundamental resource developed by theatre professionals and sustainability experts. It provides practical guidelines necessary to achieve climate neutrality by 2030 in three distinct areas: Sustainable Productions, Sustainable Operations and Sustainable Buildings. Achieving TGB standards requires meeting increasing requirements for incorporating circularity and the reuse of materials.

The TN-CDV, as an ETC member, reinforces the critical importance of collective action and knowledge sharing among European theatres to effectively address the climate crisis, demonstrating practical sustainability in Sustainable Productions: the Company reused used coffee capsule boxes from the Sá de Miranda Municipal Theatre Café, integrating them into the scenography of the production Quantas Meninices! (‘How many childhoods!’). Earlier, the digital production Nada Mais Bonito (‘Nothing More Beautiful’) also embraced a minimalist and eco-friendly approach, minimizing its environmental impact by using most of the set comprised of interactive rear projection.

This approach also marks a significant step in making the production more accessible to an international audience, as new artistic mediums can be easily transported across Europe.

In line with its overall institutional best practices, the Company was also previously recognized with the Equal Pay Seal. This distinction was awarded by the Portuguese Government’s Commission for Equality in the Workplace (CITE), valuing the TN-CDV’s practices in promoting equal pay between women and men for equal work or work of equal value.

December Programme Highlights

The Teatro do Noroeste - Centro Dramático de Viana will feature two key events in December:

2026 Programme Presentation: The complete Programme for the upcoming year is scheduled to be presented on December 20, 2025. The programming aims to consolidate Viana do Castelo as an important cultural hub at local, national, and international levels.

Premiere of Ligas ou desligo-te? (‘Do you call or do I hang you up?’): The Company is premiering its 172nd creation, a show for the youth which will circulate free of charge through the public 3rd Cycle Basic Education Schools in the Municipality of Viana do Castelo from December 2 to 15, 2025, with two sessions per day, Monday to Friday. The show invites thinking on concepts such as "Having to answer", "To be for me. To be for you", "Reschedule", "Reconnect", "Return" and the dichotomy "Just to be or to be present?".

The creation involves Alexandre Calçada (co-creation and interpretation) alongside with co-creators Adriel Filipe, Elisabete Pinto, Ricardo Simões, Tiago Fernandes.

This new production follows a series of successful school creations, including Outra vez peixe?! (‘Fish again?!’), which was presented to over 1,500 students in 2nd Cycle schools in October, and Quero Ser Feliz Agora! (‘I want to be happy now!’), which toured Secondary Schools in November 2025. The School Theatre Offer for 2025-2026 aims to reach over 14,000 students across all cycles of Basic Education.
