ETC Workshop Series: Cinematic Lighting for the Theatre Stage

Cinematic Lighting for the Theatre Stage is a new workshop series for technical directors at ETC Member Theatres.

ETC has partnered with experts at the Academy for Theatre and Digitality and from Volkstheater Wien to offer technical directors at ETC member theatres an in-depth workshop series on the latest theatre lighting techniques. This include lighting the stage while projecting video.

Technical Directors / Lighting Designers at ETC Member Theatres.

Workshop Schedule


  • Tuesday 28 March 2023, 15:00 - 16:30 CET (Online)

    A meeting between workshop participants & experts, getting to know each other and assessing the participants' needs.

  • Tuesday 25 April 2023, 15:00-17:00 CET (Online)

    Introducing the theory on how to design and use light on stage when there's also video projection, live filming and other light sources at the same time.

  • Tuesday 20 - Wednesday 21 June 2023 (On-Site)

    Workshop participants travel to Dailes Teatris, Riga for two half-days of practical experience with the theatre's tech equipment.


Participation in all three parts of the workshop series is required.

Travel Grants

ETC can offer 8 participants a 300 EUR grant towards travel to the workshop in Riga, on a first-come, first-served basis. One representative per ETC member theatre. 

Workshop Experts

Voxi Bärenklau

Lighting Designer at Volkstheater Wien

Born in 1960, he has been working as a cameraman in cinema and TV productions for directors such as Helge Schneider, Christoph Schlingensief, Uli Lommel and Adolf Winkelmann since 1987, and since 2002 also as a freelance light and video designer for theater and opera productions.

He has been working with Kay Voges since 2015, for example on the BORDERLINE PROCESSION, which was invited to the Theatertreffen in 2017, for DIE STADT DER BLINDEN at the Schauspielhaus Hamburg, DON'T BE EVIL at the Volksbühne Berlin, DIES IRAE at the Burgtheater Vienna and for the operas DER FRESCHÜTZ and AIDA at the Hanover State Opera. Other collaborations with Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson, Karin Beier, Sebastian Hartmann, Johan Simons, Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito. In 2002 he received the German Short Film Award in Gold for the short film FETISCH, which he produced together with Richard Lehun.

From the winter semester 2021 he has been teaching at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Since the beginning of the 2022/23 season he has been working as a permanent lighting designer at the Volkstheater Wien.

Mario Simon

Audio-visual media technology and audio-video production at the Academy for Theatre and Digitality

After graduating from high school, Mario Simon studied German, literature and cultural studies, film and media studies and philosophy at the University of Bonn, the Technical University of Dortmund and in Hagen. In Bonn he worked from 2010-2011 in the research project "Mediatized Worlds" - Deliberation on the Net: Forms and Function of Digital Discourse using the example of the microblogging system Twitter of the German Research Foundation.  

From 2003 to 2007 he was not only the guitarist for the punk band Anewhope, but also took care of booking, marketing and social media marketing. From 2009-2013 Mario Simon was then involved in the alternative Dortmund cult carnival Geierabend in the areas of social media marketing, stage management and video and guested as a technical, equipment and camera assistant, among other things in various productions of the West German Broadcasting Corporation. 

Mario Simon worked for the Dortmund Theater for the first time on the shooting of  Some Messages to the Universe  (Director: Kay Voges, Best Production NRW-Theatertreffen 2013, 2nd place Experimental Film Sunset Film Festival Los Angeles).

Mario Simon has been working at Schauspiel Dortmund since 2013 and has been artistic director of the video department since 2014. Here he worked with directors Kay Voges ( 4.48 Psychose  and  Das Fest  - nominated for the German Theater Prize Der Faust 2013), Claudia Bauer, Jörg Buttgereit and Klaus Gehre as well as with the directors' collective sputnic on the first animated film in the world to be shown live in front of the eyes of the Theater Spectators Arose:  The Possibility of an Island, awarded the special prize of the Dortmund Critics' Jury 2015. 

Mario Simon worked with Director of Photography Voxi Bärenklau for the first time on Kay Voges' DIE SHOW. This was followed by the Dortmund productions  of Endspiel,  The Borderline Procession  (invited to the 54th Berlin Theater Meeting), The Black Fleet, hell | a moment  (all directed by Kay Voges) and The Parallel World (Schauspiel Dortmund/Berliner Ensemble). 

Simon also worked on the production of Fuck the Facts at the Neuköllner Oper, directed by Christian Römer, and at the State Opera in Hanover on the production of Aida, directed by Kay Voges.
