Artistic Residencies in Ukraine with GogolFest / Dakh Theatre

ETC Member Theatre Dakh Theatre – which also runs one of the biggest arts festivals in Ukraine, Gogolfest – is running an open call for 3 directors from Europe to collaborate a new festival in the country: iStage Free Theaters Festival.

The selected directors will join the ‘Marathon of International Theatre Residencies’ project and will work alongside Ukrainian directors, independent artists and theatrical artists on creative experiments that will result “in the creation of a new cultural product in Mariupol, transforming the city into an art centre of Ukraine with new energy.”

The performances can take place in a variety of formats, including site-specific and digital formats, and may also then be presented at Gogolfest.

Terms: 2 to 4 weeks in July and August

Two major theatrical events are planned for August: the Marathon of International Theatre Residences (MITR) within the framework of the Great Cultural Capital project with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation and the Mariupol City Council and the iStage Free Theatres Festival within the Gogolfest.

The Marathon of International Theatre Residences (MITR) is a modern theatrical laboratory of international dialogue, designed to open a new cultural Mariupol to Ukraine and the world. The long theatrical residence will unite contemporary Ukrainian and European directors, independent artists, theatrical artists in creative experiments, which will result in the creation of a new cultural product in Mariupol, transforming the city into an art center of Ukraine with new energy.

The Marathon of International Theatre Residences (MITR) is looking for 2 directors from Europe for collaborating with Ukrainian theatrical teams. The duration of the project - from 10 days to 4 weeks, during July and August. The interaction format allows you to start working online and continue offline, arriving in Mariupol and presenting your work. Creating a performance can take place in a variety of formats, including site-specific and digital formats.

The selected participants will get possibility to develope their own production in the formats “work in progress”. Sketch performances will be presented in the framework of the iStage Free Theaters Festival (11-15 of August 2021)  or as independent public event until end of summer this year. Potentially, could be also presented during one of the regional Gogolfest (during 2021/ 2022)

Participation in the collaboration includes, free of cost:

  • accommodation/food;
  • flight and train tickets;
  • medical insurance and test expenses;
  • technical needs, supplies and materials;
  • scholarship for the period of a theatre production process.

Also, participants will be provided with local artists, technical team, management of performance production, rehearsal space, different locations for the performance and promotion support.

  • Production references: maximum 3 images each with title and date, or links to videos (on YouTube/Vimeo) compiled in one pdf file.
  • Cover/motivation letter: 250-500 words describing your practice and how it fits with the residency opportunity. Please, explain your interest in Ukraine and the residency. What knowledge or skills would you like to gain? What areas of practice would you like to develop?
