The theater was founded in 1917 in Kyiv as the first state theater of Ukraine – the Ukrainian National Theater. Since 1923, it has been named after Mariia Zankovetska.

There are 4 stages - Main (785 seats), Chamber (60 s.), Strykh (70 s.), Skarbek's Hall (40 s.), the repertoire fills about 40 performances.

In 2023, a creative "reboot" of the theater took place, headed by Maksym Holenko, new general director - artistic director.
