Scenes from a Marriage
Marianne and Johan seem to have everything it takes to be the perfect couple: ten years of marriage, two children, a beautiful home. But this ideal façade begins to crack.
In Protestant Sweden in the 1970s, she is a divorce lawyer and he is an academic. They should, in theory, know how to communicate and be able to master the power of words. But when the prospect of separation emerges, something starts to unravel.
Scenes from a Marriage examines, step by step, the construction and deconstruction of the institutions of “marriage” and “couplehood”. Bénédicte Cerutti and Laurent Poitrenaux, brought together on stage for the first time by Arthur Nauzyciel, tell the story of a couple coming apart, while highlighting the dynamics of power and control at work in the intimate structures we build and the environments we inhabit.
Following La Dame aux camélias, Mes frères and Les Paravents, Arthur Nauzyciel continues his exploration of mechanisms of domination, shifting his focus from the public sphere to the closed world of the couple. Swedish writer, theatre and film director Ingmar Bergman (1918–2007) was one of the most acclaimed artists of his generation. His work received numerous awards.
