The culture of sign language & Deaf communities
Led by Deaf artist, performer and visual artist Diana Anselmo, this webinar offers an insight into Deaf culture, sign language and the experiences, histories and creative practices of Deaf communities.
Drawing on his artistic research into the “Anti-History of the Deaf Community”, as well as his work as a performer, curator, accessibility manager and Deaf Cultural Advisor, Diana will explore how sign language is not simply a means of communication, but a language, culture and way of experiencing the world. The session will also consider the importance of Deaf-led artistic and cultural spaces, representation and meaningful participation of Deaf people in the arts.
With a practice spanning theatre, performance and visual art, and as the first artistic director of Repubblica Sorda, currently Italy’s only professional festival dedicated to performing arts and live performances of Deaf arts and sign language, Diana brings a distinctive perspective on how cultural institutions can better understand, include and work alongside Deaf communities.
